I don’t know about you, but a lot of the time I feel like I am not getting what I deserve. I should have a better this, a more comfortable that – just a better life. I think I deserve it. Let’s take a minute and reflect on what we deserve eternally.
God is the Maximally Perfect Being. That being the case, there is a simple test to find out if you are God or not: are you perfect? If so, you’re God. I’m not and I’m pretty sure you aren’t either.
Perfection cannot accept imperfection. If it did, it would cease to exist. In the same way, God cannot accept us as we are: imperfect.
So, since God is perfect and I am not, what I really deserve is to be rejected by Him. This rejection should last as long as He is Perfect. That is, as long as God is God… forever. That’s hell. That’s what I deserve.
This is why the Gospel is so good! God replaces what we deserve with grace – getting what I don’t deserve. Not only does He put up with me during this life, He offers me free entrance into eternal life with Him, through Jesus.
So, instead of arguing and complaining about what I deserve, today I’m going to thank God for giving me what I explicitly do not deserve – life. What about you?
