Respect His Authority!

Mark 1:21-22 ESV – And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.  And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.

So Jesus has just recruited 4 disciples, and they head into town.  The first time He gets a chance, Jesus steps up in the synagogue and starts teaching people about God from the Scriptures.  It says that they were astonished at his teaching because He had authority.
I tend to have at least a slightly-negative view of authority.  I mean, this country is all about freedom, right?  That’s what I was born into.  I have my rights.  Don’t be telling me what I can and cannot do.  That’s why our culture tends to mock authority.  People in Jesus’ day respected it.  Why?  It was rare.

The scribes would explain the Scriptures as best they could.  They would probably give some differing explanations depending on which Rabbi they had studied under.  Perhaps they used the Scriptures to coerce people to a certain political bent (Pharisees vs Sadducees?).

Jesus taught the Scriptures with authority.  He knew exactly what the scrolls meant because He wrote them!  The author was explaining exactly what He meant, and people loved it.  The Mystery started to fade as people saw Jesus.  Shouldn’t it be that way with us?  We should revel in Jesus’ authority over our lives; He is the author.
